Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing: EMDR
A specialized therapy approach that focuses on working with trauma.

EMDR is a therapy designed to help people process and heal from traumatic or upsetting memories. Sometimes, traumatic memories don’t get processed correctly which causes ongoing emotional pain. An example of this is when something reminds you of the traumatic memory, it can bring back strong and distressing feelings with it. EMDR helps by guiding you to revisit these memories in a safe way, with a supportive therapist while using techniques like eye movements or tapping to stimulate both sides of your brain. This process allows your brain to reprocess the memory so it becomes less painful over time. The goal of EMDR is to help you think about the memory without feeling overwhelmed by negative emotions surrounding it, so that it no longer negatively impacts your life in the present.
