Internal Family Systems: IFS
A compassionate trauma therapy modality.

In IFS therapy, the idea of "Parts" and the "Self" are key. We all have different parts inside us, developed at times when we needed protection or care. These parts were helpful in the past, but they may not always work well for us now. Each part has its own thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Here’s how they are categorized: - Exiles: These parts hold emotional pain, like fear or shame, often caused by past trauma or difficult experiences. The system pushes them aside to avoid feeling this pain. - Managers: These parts work to keep things under control, often through perfectionism or people-pleasing, to protect the system from emotional distress. A lot of IFS therapy focuses on understanding and working with these parts. - Firefighters: These parts jump in during a crisis to stop the emotional pain from the exiles. They try to bring quick relief, even if their behaviors—like overeating or substance use—aren’t always helpful. - The Self: The Self is the calm, compassionate core within us. When we connect with our Self, we feel peace and wisdom. The Self can guide us to heal by building positive relationships with all of our parts.
